4 Programs Improving Women’s Health in the Developing World

Women’s healthcare in the developing world continues to be an area in need of funding and awareness. Fortunately, there are many organizations that are making it their goal to provide medical resources, education and healthcare for women and children around the globe.

According to the World Health Organization, 1000 women die each day as a result of pregnancy or complications during childbirth. A woman can also expect to live on average 24 more years in a high income country than a lower income one. Statistics like these highlight the need for continued aid.

Here are 4 programs that are currently in place to help women in the developing world.

1. UNICEF

UNICEF is an organization that helps provide a level playing field  for women and future generations. One area of particular interest is helping to improve maternal health in areas of the world where healthcare and funding are lacking. Their target for 2015 is to reduce the maternal mortality ratio by three quarters. In order to reach this goal, UNICEF is helping to improve emergency obstetric care.

According to their literature, nearly half of all births that occur in the developing world take place without having a skilled birth attendant present. In order to increase the survival rate of both mother and baby, UNICEF works with  the United Nations Population Fund and the World Health Organization and other organizations to increase healthcare available to newborns, children and mothers.

2. Global Fund for Women

The Global Fund for Women was founded in 1987 in California. Since that time, the organization has continued to seek out areas that lack women’s human rights worldwide in order to raise money for these causes. In the hope of advancing the rights of girls and women around the world, the Global Fund for Women focuses on some of the most pressing issues including war, poverty and disease.

3. International Women’s Health Coalition

The International Women’s Health Coalition helps girls and women exercise their human rights. These include having access to the information, services and resources needed to maintain a healthy life, the ability to make decisions regarding pregnancy, child-bearing, relationships and other reproductive rights and also to help advance sexual and reproductive rights.

Currently the International Women’s Health Coalition lists the following as prioritizes:

* Advance the rights of adolescent girls
* Promote comprehensive sexuality education
* End early and forced marriage
* Ensure safe and legal abortion

4. Women Thrive Worldwide

This Washington, D.C. based organizations help bring women’s issues to decision-makers in the country’s capital. Their policy priorities include education, economic opportunity, food security, violence against women and girls and to aid effectiveness.

Do you currently donate any funding to an organization? Which one? We would love to hear from you!
