World Day of Social Justice — The Fight for the Pill

Now more than ever we are called to actively participate in making our world a better place. If you’re not sure where to even begin, joining in on the fight for contraceptives and women’s reproductive rights is a great place to start. February 20th was proclaimed the World Day of Social Justice in 2007 by the General Assembly at the United Nations, as a day to “support efforts of the international community in poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment and decent work, gender equity and access to social well-being and justice for all.” Sounds like a great deal—what better day to join the cause?

History of the women’s rights movement

Looking back, we must thank women like Margaret Sanger, who fought for contraceptives when it was illegal to even discuss it publicly. She opened local clinics for women in New York City in the 1960s and was arrested multiple times during her long and dedicated fight. Though we’ve come a long way since then, there continues to be an ongoing battle for widely accessible birth control and basic reproductive rights for women around the world.

How birth control transformed women’s rights

The introduction of the pill was a revolutionary moment in the women’s rights movement, as it allowed women to finally separate having sex from the consequence of having a child. Today, women take the pill for many reasons, including irregular periods, painful cramps, and even acne. Young women rely on this method of birth control daily to stay healthy, be confident, and live at ease knowing that they’re protected from pregnancy.
