Celebrating Human Rights Day

At PRJKT RUBY, we spend a lot of time educating our followers and consumers about women’s rights. Whether that is access to contraception or the freedom to choose, women deserve to make their own decisions on what to do with their body. As we approach the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10th, we are reminded that all people deserve the equality, justice and human dignity we are often promised but are still working towards achieving.

According to the United Nations, the original declaration “sets out universal values and a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations. It establishes the equal dignity and worth of every person.” Heavy stuff, right? Still, these standards and values are as relevant now as they were in 1948. In bringing awareness to this day, the UN hopes to educate and encourage people to stand up for their rights and the rights of others around the world.

So where do we come into play? PRJKT RUBY has a mission to help women in the developing world get access to contraception and family planning services, despite their income, race, social status or age. Even in the United States, birth control is becoming more difficult for women to get through their doctors or their employers’ healthcare plans. According to Bustle, “we live in a society which depends on the collective whole being willing to work together to tend to the needs of the few, and the women in this country who need birth control are not just a few.” Fact. Millions of women rely on access to contraception for an array of health complications, and of course to avoid unintended pregnancy. The right to make your own health decisions and have access to the medications you need is a part of what makes our country so great—despite a small group who aims to take those rights away.

So what can you do to spread the good word? For starters, educate yourself! The UN has some amazing resources that can teach you more about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and what global efforts are currently in place. Additionally, share the hashtag #StandUp4HumanRights on Human Rights Day to spread the knowledge and share these universal values. Together, we can make a difference.
