Male Birth Control Pill May Soon Be a Reality

Ladies, you may not be the only ones taking birth control in the next few years! We are now another step closer to making male birth control a reality. So how does it work? Here’s the lowdown…

Male contraceptive name: Vasalgel

How it works: This reversible contraceptive method for men is being developed currently by the Parasemus Foundation. This non-profit is shooting for distribution by 2018. Vasalgel is injected and creates a polymer gel barrier in the vas deferens area (the area where sperm pass through). While this is essentially the same idea as a vasectomy, where the vas deferens is cut, Vasalgel is easily reversed with a second injection to clear the barrier.

What this means for men: Typically birth control has fallen largely under the sexual responsibilities of the woman in the relationship. Now, with male birth control on the horizon, men too can take control over their reproductive rights. Previously, men who did not want to have a child had limited options for reliable contraceptive methods aside from a vasectomy or the more temporary option of using a condom.

While the potential for male birth control is being praised by many, some skeptics believe that it could be challenging to get men to take responsibility when it comes to contraception. After all, women have been the partner responsible in this department for decades, are men willing to step up and take over? The answer to that question is yet to be seen.

In addition, many women enjoy taking their birth control. Gone are the days when the pill came with certain not-so-pleasant side effects. For most women, the shorter periods are a welcome break along with the predictability of knowing when their periods will start and stop.

What do you think? If/When this product hits the market, would you or your partner be interested in taking advantage of it? Or would you stick to the normal female birth control pill routine?
