Are You Making Your Period Worse?

When it comes to that one dreaded week a month, most of us are more than happy to curl up on the couch with our heating pads and binge watch Netflix all day.

Perhaps you even feel like Vada Sultenfuss from the 90s tearjerker My Girl…

What if we told you that you have the ability to make your period a bit less bothersome?

Well, for starters, if you are doing any of these 5 things you are definitely making your period worse than it needs to be.

  1. Skipping the Pill
If you have skipped the pill more than once in a cycle, you run a much higher risk of facing horrible PMS. Causing your hormones to fluctuate is never a good idea and you will really be wishing you had stuck to your schedule when you are hit with an abnormal and uncomfortable period as a result.
  2.  Drinking Lots of Coffee
While a large portion of the population can’t imagine starting a morning off without a big cup of coffee, it’s been proven that the side effects of caffeine, mainly anxiety, insomnia and irritability, can make PMS symptoms worse. You may want to back off your caffeine overload during your period.
  3. Too Much Alcohol
The idea of having a drink to ease killer cramps may seem like a good one, but did you know that overdoing it on the alcohol can actually prolong those miserable cramps? Yikes!
  4. Giving in to Cravings
You may have noticed that the week before your period you are craving comfort food. That’s because your serotonin levels dip and as a result, your body craves things that will make you feel good. Try and be aware of this and reach for healthier carbs when these cravings hit.
  5. Being a Couch Potato
While the idea of being active during your period may sound like a nightmare, it can actually help reduce the pain and discomfort you are feeling. That’s because exercise releases endorphins, the “feel good hormones” which also work as a natural pain killer.
