How Will Trump’s Presidency Affect Birth Control?
The Internet has been stirring over what is going to happen to women’s access to birth control and family planning when Donald Trump takes office. Thousands of women are taking to social media encouraging others to get an IUD, a long-term birth control that’s inserted into a woman’s uterus, while they still can. So what is actually going to happen? While the future is not exactly clear, here is what we do know…
First, Donald Trump took an anti-abortion stance during his campaign and declared that he would overturn Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court case that legalized abortion. He also wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which requires insurance companies to provide free birth control to their customers and gave 47 million women access to preventive health services. According to NPR, they asked the Trump Administration if birth control was going to stay co-pay free during his presidency, but did not get an answer.
However, hope is not yet lost. Barack Obama did take action this week in signing a new measure that will permanently protect Planned Parenthood. It ensures that low-income Americans can still have access to the most basic preventive health care and family services through Title X grants.
