Why You Shouldn’t Freak Out Over a Late Period

“My period is always on time. I’m on birth control. I’ve been careful. Is it possible? Am I pregnant?” You can take a deep breath. A late period does not necessarily mean you’re pregnant.

So Why Could I Have Missed My Period?

There are a ton of factors and reasons why you may have a late/missed period. The most common are: stress, a change in routine, excessive exercise, being sick, a poor diet, taking medications, changing birth control methods, weight gain or weight loss, genetic issues, thyroid issues, eating disorders, and more.

What Is The Biggest Cause of Missed Period, Other Than Pregnancy?

Emotions and stress can have a serious impact on the regularity of your period. A busy schedule or stressing about your issues/problems can delay your period for a few days. Even more ironically, stressing about your period can make things even worse. If you’ve had unprotected sex or missed a few birth control pills, the stress of being pregnant can actually trick your body into thinking it’s pregnant when you’re not!

But I’m On Birth Control?

It is perfectly normal for women who are on hormone-based birth control to experience very light bleeding or no bleeding at all for the first couple of months. When just starting a new method of birth control, it takes your body a while to adjust to the hormonal changes that are occurring. This adjustment period can take up to a few months before your cycle becomes regular.

Another factor to consider if you’re on birth control and have a missed period is your inactive pills, or placebo pills. It is common for women to sometimes accidentally skip these pills and immediately start a new pack of active pills. This will cause a missed period.

So, When Should I Be Worried?

If you are starting to experience pregnancy symptoms such as: breast tenderness, nausea, increased urination, fatigue and food cravings, or have gone two consecutive months with a missed period, please see your doctor. Also, if you’ve had unprotected sex and think you may be pregnant, PRJKT RUBY does offer Emergency Contraceptives that can be delivered straight to your door in 2-3 days.
