Caffeine & PMS – A Not So Great Combination

It’s that time of the month again. You’re tired, grumpy and achy and go to reach for a cup of deliciously caffeinated coffee. Stop right there and think again! Studies have shown that PMS symptoms are typically two to seven times greater in women who consume two or more cups of coffee/tea each day.

Caffeine has long been believed to worsen certain symptoms of menstruation such as anxiety, insomnia or irritability. It may give you the temporary pick-me-up that you are looking for, but it also lowers your levels of serotonin and will leave you feeling low on energy in the end. Coffee, tea, chocolate and certain soft drinks and energy drinks contain caffeine. Coffee, specifically, is a diuretic and makes you have to use the restroom more often and also increases breast tenderness (as if they aren’t tender enough)!

Caffeine has also been linked to an increase in menstrual cramps as it can constrict blood flow, which leads to more pain. Excess caffeine can also cause symptoms such as sleep troubles, headaches, and anxiety.

To prevent heightened PMS symptoms, try to avoid caffeinated beverages and foods during your menstrual cycle. If your symptoms are severe, you may have a bigger issue such as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and you should see your doctor.
