When Love Hurts: Is Painful Sex Normal?

Painful sex is more common than you think! In fact, according to the American College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians, 75 percent of women will experience some sort of pain during or right after sex. It is important to know that some types of pain are easily remedied, while others can be signs of something more serious.

So when is sexual discomfort normal?

If you’re feeling pain in a specific sex position, it is likely that your body does not agree with that position. Try switching it up and notice if the pain subsides. Lack of lubrication is another common cause of pain that women face. One of the side effects of hormonal birth control pills is vaginal dryness. Also, women take longer to be aroused than men, so consider opting for a personal lubricant or add a few extra minutes of foreplay before you engage with your partner. Vaginas are meant to handle A LOT, but sometimes they get tired. Muscle soreness is common after a long and/or intense session.

When should I be worried?

The term “burning love” comes to mind here. If you are experiencing itching, burning or discharge, make an appointment to see your physician. You could have a yeast infection, bacterial infection or a sexually transmitted disease. Additionally, if you suffer frequent or severe pain, you should see a doctor. You could have something more serious, such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, vaginismus or vulvodynia. For some women, sexual discomfort is only a temporary issue; for others, it is long-term. It is important to take notice when pain occurs and other symptoms that may accompany it.
